FERC silent auct 2015

Greetings!

We very much appreciated everyone who supported the Foundation for Education of Rural Children (FERC) by attending at our last Silent Auction Fundraiser event in December of 2013 and we’d be extremely happy if you were to decide to attend the upcoming event at the River Market on Sunday, February 8th from 3:30PM. If you are planning to and have not yet purchased a ticket, or tickets, please let me know and I’ll arrange to get them to you. And obviously we’d very much appreciate you sharing the event information with your circle of friends. Great food (yes, more than just sandwiches and cakes), live music, an array of excellent auction items, and a enjoyable and worthwhile time guaranteed.

And here’s a link to a short video (under 90 seconds) that one of our sponsors, Jacob Wood, put together during his last visit, which may provide just a little insight into what FERC is all about. We have a focus and commitment to assist as many underprivileged children as we can to further their education and provide some opportunity for them to have a more successful and productive future. http://vimeo.com/89464781

Health Alert — Influenza A

health alert

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We have had a number of students suffering from flu like symptoms in the early elementary and Kindergarten, and want to try to reduce the spread of infection within the CMIS community.

The school administration is asking parents of children in CMIS to keep their children home at the sign of any flu-like illness and for them to remain home until they are 1 day symptom free (without the use of medication to reduce fever).

We must see the students at the Nurse’s office as they return to school, in order to give them a clearance pass to return to class. Please inform the school if your child has been diagnosed with Flu Type A or B.

The signs and symptoms of the flu virus include typical influenza-like illness with fever greater than 37.8OC, lethargy, sore throat, headache, runny nose, coughing, sneezing and muscle aches. Gastrointestinal symptoms may also be present which include nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Sufferers are infectious 24 hours before symptoms appear and the sickness lasts for approximately 7 days. incubation period for this virus is 3 days.

The Center for Disease Control recommends the primary means to reduce the spread of influenza in schools is to focus on early identification of ill students and staff, staying home when ill, and good cough and hand hygiene etiquette being taught.

Please remind your children of the following:

•                  Build up good body immunity. This means a proper diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and reducing stress.

•                  Keep hands clean by washing them properly and regularly.

•                  Cover nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing and use disposable tissues.

•                  Maintain good personal hygiene and wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose.

•                  Wash hands before and after touching any part of the face. Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth after visiting public places.

•                  Keep hands, pencils and pens out of mouths.

•                  Do not share towels, wash cloths, pillows, sports bottles, drinks, food or eating utensils.

•                  Use serving utensils at meal times

•                  Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation

•                  Use liquid soap for hand-washing and disposable towels for drying hands

•                  Use alcohol gel after washing and drying hands in soap and water.

•                  Consult Doctor promptly if respiratory symptoms and fever develop.

•                  If you are ill, do not take public transport and wear a mask to cover the nose and mouth when in public.

Thank you all for your cooperation. We will continue to update on a regular basis and have asked the cleaners to carry out a thorough clean within the classrooms to reduce the risk of spread. If you have any questions, please come to talk to us in the Nurse’s office or call the Health Office on Ext. 115.

CMIS_Eagles_Logo

As you may know, the 17th Annual CMIS Invitational Basketball Tournament is fast approaching. It will be held here at school on Thursday Feb 5th, Friday Feb 6th, and Saturday Feb 7th.

It takes a lot of work to make this tournament happen, and we are looking for volunteers who may be interested in helping out at the scorer table during the tournament.  This means people to run the timer, run the scoreboard, and keep track of the game statistics on the scoresheet.  It is definitely helpful if you have good foundational knowledge of basketball, but there will also be training for those of you who need a brush up on your skills or want to learn some new skills!

If you are interested in helping out, please email Ms. Hanni Oppel at hoppel@cmis.ac.th and let her know you are interested.  She will provide you with more information in the near future.

At approximately 8:10 pm on the evening of February 1, 2015, Thai authorities reported that two small improvised explosive devices detonated in close proximity to the Siam Paragon Shopping Mall BTS entrance.  Security personnel responded immediately to the scene to secure the area and began investigating the incident.  This investigation remains ongoing.

While the security situation has been generally peaceful over the last six months, this event emphasizes that security incidents can occur without warning.  While traveling in Thailand, U.S. citizens are advised to remain vigilant and exercise caution, especially if in the vicinity of any large gatherings.  Be alert and aware of your surroundings.  Unattended packages or bags in public areas should be reported to law enforcement/security personnel immediately.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Thailand enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program(STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov.  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.  Read the Country Specific Information for Thailand.  For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” on the State Department’s website.

Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate for up-to-date information on travel restrictions.  You can also call 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or 1-202-501-4444 from other countries.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).  Follow us on Twitter and Facebook, and download our free Smart Traveler iPhone App to have travel information at your fingertips.

The American Citizen Services Unit of the U.S. Embassy (http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/service.html) is located at 95 Wireless Road in Bangkok, and can be reached by calling 66-2-205-4049, or by e-mailingacsbkk@state.gov. The Embassy’s after-hours emergency telephone number is 66-2-205-4000.

Come join us for Thai Day 2015

From our Director:

Dear CMIS Community,

We are excited to announce that we will host our Thai Day 2015 on Friday, February 20th.  The theme of the event will be “60 years…..of Faith and Service”.  This will be a wonderful time to share the culture, ways of dress, games, and food of Thailand with our students and parents from overseas.

We would like to invite our whole community to join us in wearing Thai dress for this event.   There are Lanna Thai styles of dress and Thai National dress from which to choose.  We hope that you can find something appropriate, comfortable, and not expensive to wear for this festive event.

I hope that you will be able to join us.

May the Lord bless you,

Best Regards,
Manoonvatana Sirisujin
Director

From our PTG:

Thai Day is an event where we celebrate the cultural richness and diversity of Thailand. There will be games for the students, diverse activities and delicious food. More detailed information will be given to you by the school administrators.

The Thai foods, drinks and snacks on this day will be sold for a small price (about 10-30 baht per set). Part of the profits will go to the PTG funds, and will be used for the benefit of the school. At the event, only coupons can be used to buy items. Outside the normal ‘ 10 Baht Cash coupons’, some specials-coupons will be sold, like ‘Photo shoot’ and a ‘Lucky dip’ coupons.

The PTG is selling all these coupons on:

  • Monday February 16th,
  • Tuesday February 17th and
  • Wednesday February 18th

directly after school, from 14:15 – 15:15 hrs, at the stone tables

Although coupons will be sold on the day of event as well, we advise everyone to buy the coupons in advance, to avoid long waiting queues at the selling point on the event day itself.

Please note: Any unused coupon can be returned on the day of event itself, so you don’t have to worry if you order too many coupons in advance.

N.B. Parents of children in Pre-K and elementary grades have received a Pre-order form through the home room teacher. You can also use this form to pre-order the coupons. We will then send the coupons home with your child at the beginning of next week. Please return the forms not later than this Friday.

We thank you for your co-operation and we look forward to seeing you all at the ‘Thai Day 2015’!

On Monday, February 23rd, the Boy Scout Troop 731 visited the US Consulate to meet with Mike Heath, the US Consul General; Amir Masliyah, the Management Officer; Mike Megeath, the Regional Security Officer; and Ryan Reynolds, the Vice Consul to talk about the role of the US Consulate here in Chiang Mai and the kinds of things that happen there.

image

Mr. Heath gave an overview of the State Department and some historical background about the US diplomatic presence here in Thailand.  Mr. Masliyah then talked about some of the benefits and the challenges of life in the State Department.  Mr. Megeath shared his area of responsibility in security, both with respect to the diplomatic presence here and to the US citizens living in the region.  After that, Mr. Reynolds helped he scouts understand more about the importance of our passports and how they are much more than a simple document for collecting stamps.

It was a fantastic opportunity to see inside the beautiful, historic US Consulate compound and see what happens there.  We are very grateful to Mr. Reynolds, who is also a member of Troop 731, for arranging this event.

Mork Faa - Waterfall 2015

Mork Faa – Waterfall 2015

Troop 731 went on our February campout to Mork Faa Waterfall Park this past weekend (February 20 – 22).  The weather was great (a little chilly at night but nice and warm in the day) and we made the most of it by completing a 10 mile/16 km hike in the surrounding area.  Following our hike the scouts played in the cool waterfall and checked out a bat cave.

Late afternoon on Saturday, training was given on the Camping Merit Badge.  A merit badge is an achievement award that scouts earn when they have learned about a topic and demonstrated their proficiency in this area.  The Camping Merit Badge is an important one as scouts needs to be prepared with proper equipment and knowledge of how to use it properly when considering staying outdoors, in sometimes extreme temperatures/climates.

Mork Faa - Overholt Teaching

Sunday morning we spent some time considering Our Maker, God, and what He has done for us.  We ended the campout with instruction on lashings and tying knots.  These are skills that will stay with the scouts for a lifetime.

I Hate Hamlet Poster Low Res

I Hate Hamlet

Theatergoers looking for lighter winter fare should enjoy the dramatic comedy I Hate Hamlet, to be presented by The Gate Theater Group March 4, 5, 6, @ 7:PM, March 7 @ 3:00 PM in the Studio Theater at Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Mall. Tickets are 300 baht. For More info call 087 177 2195.

The Story: In this work by Paul Rudnick, up-and-coming television star Andrew Rally has been offered the part of Hamlet as part of the Shakespeare in the Park series and rents a Gothic apartment in New York City. Unfortunately, Andrew is not thrilled with the idea of spouting classic lines written by The Bard. In fact, he hates Hamlet.

Adding to his quandary is the presence of John Barrymore’s ghost, who arrives at the apartment (his former home) in full Hamlet costume — and fully inebriated — with the sole intent of convincing young Andrew to take on the iconic role.

The contrast between the two actors — the towering, dissipated Barrymore, whose Hamlet was the greatest of his time, and Andrew Rally, a hot middle-aged TV star — leads to a hilariously funny verbal duel over art, women, duty, success, television and even the apartment they occupy.

Goldielocks On Trial Low R

Chiang Mai International School (CMIS) Theater Arts Department will present the children’s comedy “Goldilocks On Trial” March 20 @ 5:00 pm & 21 at 12:00 @ 3:00 pm at the CMIS Auditorium.

In comedic form, this exciting story examines the familiar fairy tale “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”.

Guilty or innocent? Was the young girl a selfish, spoiled brat, intruding where she didn’t belong? Or was she the victim of three conniving bears? Complete with a not-so-smart judge, a crazy bailiff, two comic lawyers and a jury which gets involved in the action. This charming comedy is perfect for audiences from grade 4 and up.

From the opening moment, when Goldilocks is brought in wearing handcuffs to the surprising verdict from the judge and a “happily-ever-after” conclusion the play is both unique and entertaining.

Ticket prices are 100 baht for students and 200 baht for adults. For more information contact Stephan Turner at sturner@cmis.ac.th

CMIS After School Activity Air Quality Policy

CMIS_Eagles_Logo

Both the Athletic Department and the Health Office monitor the pollution levels throughout the day by checking the Air Quality Index (AQI) as posted by the Pollution Control Department of the Thai Government.  This website is updated hourly and we watch 36t most closely which is the monitoring station located at Yupparaj School in the old city.  AQI levels are recorded and analyzed in comparison to PM10 levels.  A final check of the AQI reading is made at 1:00 PM.  At this time, a decision is made about after school activities, and the Athletic Department will notify student-athletes, coaches, and parents of any changes to the after school activities schedule.

CMIS After School Activity Level Guidelines are aligned with the Air Quality Index (AQI) of the Environomental Production Agency of the USA Government:

  • If the AQI is below 51, air quality is defined as good.  There are no activity restrictions.
  • If the AQI is between 51 and 100, air quality is defined as moderate.  No action is taken, but all need to be alert to signs and symptoms of sensitivity to reduced air quality and adjust activity accordingly.
  • If the AQI is between 100 and 150, air quality is defined as unhealthy for sensitive groups.  Activity levels should be reduced and there should be no strenuous aerobic activities.
  • If the AQI is above 150, air quality is defined as unhealthy.  We will cancel all after school activities that are not held indoors.
