The Story:
The Christmas choir has never sounded worse! Perhaps it’s because of a lack of talent or not enough rehearsals… or it could be because the choir members aren’t sincere in their reasons for being there. Dede is trying to drum up votes for the next city council election while Laraine just wants to get out of the house and away from her large, loud family. George is always trying to sell insurance while Phoebe is trying to catch the eye of choir director, Michael, who she simply adores. Not even Ron, the photographer, can get them to cooperate! Fast lines fly in this zany send-up of human nature — some hilarious, some poignant — with each character getting his or her moment in the spotlight… literally! The good-hearted volunteer choir director thinks the only way to get someone to bless this group is if they all sneezed at the same time! If even the director has no faith, then what’s in store for this motley crew of would-be singers? Find out how a young preacher helps the choir find harmony and the true meaning of Christmas in this fast-paced Christmas comedy.

U.S. citizens in Thailand should be aware that release of declassified versions of the executive summary, findings, and conclusions of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence’s report of the CIA’s Rendition, Detention and Interrogation program could prompt anti-U.S. protests and violence against U.S. interests, including private U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens should pay attention to their surroundings and take appropriate safety precautions, including avoiding demonstrations or confrontational situations.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Thailand enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program(STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov.  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.  Read the Country Specific Information for Thailand.  For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” on the State Department’s website.

Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate for up-to-date information on travel restrictions.  You can also call 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or 1-202-501-4444 from other countries.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).  Follow us on Twitter and Facebook, and download our free Smart Traveler iPhone App to have travel information at your fingertips.

Influenza Health Alert

health alert

There have been a large number of students diagnosed with influenza within Thai schools in Chiang Mai resulting in some schools being closed by the Public Health Department. We have had a number of students suffering from flu like symptoms and want to try to reduce the spread of infection within the CMIS community.

The school administration is asking parents of children in CMIS to keep their children home at the sign of any flu-like illness and for them to remain home until they are 1 day symptom free (without the use of medication to reduce fever).

We must see the students at the Nurse’s office as they return to school, in order to give them a clearance pass to return to class. Please inform the school if your child has been diagnosed with Flu Type B.

The signs and symptoms of the flu virus include typical influenza-like illness with fever greater than 37.8OC, lethargy, sore throat, headache, runny nose, coughing, sneezing and muscle aches. Gastrointestinal symptoms may also be present which include nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Sufferers are infectious 24 hours before symptoms appear and the sickness lasts for approximately 7 days. incubation period for this virus is 3 days.

The Center for Disease Control recommends the primary means to reduce the spread of influenza in schools is to focus on early identification of ill students and staff, staying home when ill, and good cough and hand hygiene etiquette being taught.

Please remind your children of the following:

•                  Build up good body immunity. This means a proper diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and reducing stress.

•                  Keep hands clean by washing them properly and regularly.

•                  Cover nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing and use disposable tissues.

•                  Maintain good personal hygiene and wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose.

•                  Wash hands before and after touching any part of the face. Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth after visiting public places.

•                  Keep hands, pencils and pens out of mouths.

•                  Do not share towels, wash cloths, pillows, sports bottles, drinks, food or eating utensils.

•                  Use serving utensils at meal times

•                  Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation

•                  Use liquid soap for hand-washing and disposable towels for drying hands

•                  Use alcohol gel after washing and drying hands in soap and water.

•                  Consult Doctor promptly if respiratory symptoms and fever develop.

•                  If you are ill, do not take public transport and wear a mask to cover the nose and mouth when in public.

Thank you all for your cooperation. We will continue to update on a regular basis and have asked the cleaners to carry out a thorough clean within the classrooms to reduce the risk of spread. If you have any questions, please come to talk to us in the Nurse’s office or call the Health Office on Ext. 115.

A special thanks to all those who ordered through the Scholastic book clubs last month for their patience.  We ran into multiple issues with Customs which our purchasing agent, Khun Nui, very kindly resolved for us so the children could receive their books in time for Christmas.

A message to the CMIS community from Dr. Amnuay Tapingkae, Chairman of the CMIS Board of Directors

DrAmnuay

I would like to first reaffirm how honored I am to have been invited to be the Chairman of the Board of Directors at CMIS. It has been a great pleasure to work with the administrators, teachers, and staff here at this fine institution.

I am particularly pleased that the decision has been made for the school to remain on this historic campus. The school moved here in 1958 and it has been the center of not only school activity, but also the wider Chiang Mai community activity since that time. Over the decades, this campus has been home to both education and recreation for families in Chiang Mai, and that has imbued the place with a real sense of history and nostalgia for people across the globe. By remaining here, we honor their time and their legacy here at the school.

There is also a real financial benefit for remaining on this campus. Had we moved campus, the school would have had to borrow many millions of Baht that would have taken many years and great sacrifice to pay off. By remaining here on this campus, we will be able to renew the campus and remain within our reasonable financial abilities without incurring unnecessary debt.

CMIS is currently in conversation with architects about the best way to move forwards with our campus development. This process is going well and is progressing in a very positive and very exciting way. I would like to thank the administrators and the staff who are responsible for this important project. I would also like to thank the fine architects for their excellent work and guidance in this area. The combined efforts of the school and the architects to prepare our campus for the future generations of students is so vital, and I am grateful for their contributions. As this process continues and we get input from the faculty and parents, I am confident that we will have a wonderful facility that will support the excellent standards of education that CMIS has been known for and will continue to be known for in the future.

To support the campus development, I have volunteered to chair the newly established Fund-raising Committee for CMIS. I am looking forward to working closely with Andrew McRady, Peay Tananone, and Martha Butt who worked closely with me in the fund-raising efforts at Payap University. In order to improve my skills in the area of fund-raising, I will be attending the Asian Pacific Advancement Conference in Singapore. This is a regional conference that focuses on the best ways to structure and build programs within the organization which foster development and advancement of institutional programs. I am looking forward to working closely with this new CMIS Fund-raising Committee. Together, we will find new resources and support for CMIS from both within Thailand and from abroad. I also hope that the CMIS alumni, parents, and community will support our campus development and our fund-raising efforts.

I would like to wish all of you happiness, peace, and joy at this Christmas time, and may the New Year 2015 bring you the best in all things.

May God’s blessing be upon us all in this holy season.

CMIS celebrates Teacher Appreciation Day

A message from Jim Souza, Superintendent:

Thank you to the CMIS PTG for the wonderful luncheon that they provided for our staff yesterday (Thursday, January 15th).

Carl Jung, the famous Swiss psychiatrist said, “One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.”

Dear Students and Staff:

Teacher Appreciation Day is an opportunity to celebrate the role of the teacher and the impact they have made, are making and will make in all of our lives. It is refreshing to work in an environment that recognizes and values the commitment our teachers make in supporting learning for all students.

To the teaching staff of CMIS, (and to paraphrase a quote from Andy Rooney) – Most of us end up with no more than a few people who will remember us outside of our families. I want you Teachers to remember that you have thousands of people who will remember you for the rest of their lives.

Thank you for your work here at CMIS. You are appreciated today, and every day.

God Bless, and have a wonderful weekend.
